Ventolin (Salbutamol) is a selective agonist of β2-adrenergic receptors. Its therapeutic doses interact with β2-adrenergic receptors in the muscles of the bronchi. After inhalation, 10-20% of the administered dose reaches the lower respiratory tract. The medicine begins to act for 4-5 minutes after inhalation and not for 4-6 hours. Ventolin is used to relieve asthma symptoms, treating patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis.
Dosage and method of administration
Do not use the medication more often than recommended. Common starting dose for inhalation is 2.5 mg, which could later be increased up to 5 mg. The inhalation solution must be protected from microbial contamination that could spread to the patient’s mucous membranes. Use proper aseptic techniques every time you open the bottle. Avoid contact of the tip of the bottle with any surface. Do not use the solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy.
Precautions
If you notice that the medication is not helping or that your symptoms have worsened, you should consult your doctor. Taking other inhaled medications and asthma medications should be done only as recommended by your doctor. Tell your doctor about all allergic reactions in your history and also about diabetes, heart or vascular disease, heart rhythm problems, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, hypokalemia, seizure disorders.
Contradictions
Hypersensitivity to the medication or any of its components in history.
Possible adverse reactions
The most common side effects are:
• tremors in the legs, arms, hands or feet,
• tremors or shaking of the hands or feet.
The most frequent side effects are:
• fast, strong, irregular pulse or heartbeat;
• palpitations,
• chest pain,
• tachycardia and tremor or nervousness.
Interaction with other medications
Ventolin cannot be administered simultaneously with other short-acting sympathomimetic aerosol bronchodilators or used with caution to avoid harmful cardiovascular effects. Simultaneous use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants is contraindicated. Its consumption should be administered after 2 weeks after treatment with Ventolin has ended. Beta-adrenergic receptor agents are capable of producing severe bronchospasm in patients with asthma and interact to block the pulmonary effect of beta-agonists (Ventolin). Beta-agonists worsen hypokalemia caused by nonpotassium-sparing diuretics (such as loop diuretics or thiazides). Ventolin decreases serum digoxin levels.
Missed dose
If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But do not take it if it is too late or almost time for the next dose. Do not increase your recommended dose or supplemental dose. Take your doses at the same time each day to avoid missing a dose.
Overdose
Transient changes induced by β2-adrenergic receptor agonists such as tachycardia, tremor, headache are symptoms of an overdose. Severe hypokalemia appears as a result of Ventolin overdose.
Storage
Store at room temperature away from light and moisture, children and pets in an airtight container.
