Albuterol is a selective agonist of β2-adrenergic receptors. Its therapeutic doses interact with β2-adrenergic receptors in the muscles of the bronchi. After inhalation, 10-20% of the administered dose reaches the lower respiratory tract. The medicine begins to act for 4-5 minutes after inhalation and not for 4-6 hours. Albuterol is used to relieve asthma symptoms, treating patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis.
Do not use the medication more often than recommended. Common starting dose for inhalation is 2.5 mg, which could later be increased up to 5 mg. The inhalation solution must be protected from microbial contamination that could spread to the patient’s mucous membranes. Use proper aseptic techniques every time you open the bottle. Avoid contact of the tip of the bottle with any surface. Do not use the solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy.
Hypersensitivity to the medication or any of its components in history.
The most common side effects are:
• tremors in the legs, arms, hands or feet,
• tremors or shaking of the hands or feet.
The most frequent side effects are:
• fast, strong, irregular pulse or heartbeat;
• palpitations, chest pain, tachycardia and tremor or nervousness.
Missed dose
If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But do not take it if it is too late or almost time for the next dose. Do not increase your recommended dose or supplemental dose. Take your doses at the same time each day to avoid missing a dose.
Overdose
Transient changes induced by β2-adrenergic receptor agonists such as tachycardia, tremor, headache are symptoms of an overdose. Severe hypokalemia appears as a result of an Albuterol overdose .
Storage
Store at room temperature away from light and moisture, children and pets in an airtight container.
